🌙 The Ramadan Earth Guardians Challenge

Linking Culture, Family and Sustainability

Ramadan is a time of reflection, gratitude and community. It is also a powerful opportunity to reconnect with the values of moderation, stewardship and care for creation.

This year, One Earth Academy International, in partnership with Emaar and Dubai Aquarium, has launched the Ramadan Earth Guardians Challenge - a family-centred sustainability initiative designed to bring together culture, faith and climate action in a meaningful and practical way.

The challenge extends learning beyond the classroom, encouraging parents and children to take small yet powerful sustainability actions together during Ramadan.

🌍 Where Culture Meets Climate Action

Ramadan teaches gratitude for blessings:  food, water, time and community. Sustainability asks us to protect those same blessings.

Through three simple, home-based activities, families are guided to:

  • Prepare a low-waste Sustainable Iftar
  • Track and reduce water and energy consumption
  • Create an upcycled Ramadan decoration using only reused materials

Each activity is intentionally designed to reflect key Ramadan values:

  • Moderation and avoiding excess
  • Stewardship of natural resources
  • Gratitude for what we already have
  • Responsibility towards future generations

By linking these principles with the UN Sustainable Development Goals, families can see that sustainability is not separate from culture; it is deeply aligned with it.

👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 Strengthening Family Engagement

The challenge has been created to:

  • Encourage parent-child collaboration
  • Generate tangible, photo-ready outcomes
  • Spark meaningful conversations at home
  • Build sustainable habits that extend beyond Ramadan

Families create visible artefacts such as:

  • Sustainable Iftar tracker posters
  • Water and energy conservation pledge boards
  • Upcycled Ramadan decorations

These outputs celebrate creativity and also provide real evidence of values-based action.

🏆 Celebrating Positive Action

At the end of Ramadan, families who complete and share their activities are entered into the Ramadan Earth Guardians Competition.

We are delighted that Emaar / Dubai Aquarium have sponsored a special prize of four Dubai Aquarium tickets for one winning family. This experience reinforces awareness of marine conservation and connects children directly with ocean ecosystems.

In addition, a Mangrove Kayaking Experience in Jubail Mangroves has been included as a prize, allowing families to explore one of the UAE’s most important natural habitats and better understand its role in protecting biodiversity and absorbing carbon.

We extend our sincere thanks to Emaar and Dubai Aquarium for supporting this initiative and helping us celebrate sustainability in action.

🌱 Small Actions, Lasting Impact

By aligning climate action with cultural values, One Earth Academy is helping families see that environmental stewardship is not a new concept; it is already woven into traditions of gratitude and care.

As Ramadan reminds us, blessings grow when they are respected.

Through small family steps, we can build a lasting environmental legacy together.
